I see first, synthesize fast, and turn ambiguous ground into something a leader can act on — before the moment of contact passes.

Katherine Hathaway is a U.S. Army veteran, reconnaissance-trained intelligence and decision analyst, and founder of Lead Element LLC — an AI-native intelligence design studio. Her work turns ambiguous, public information into decisions leaders can act on: scored strategic foresight and tools that train human judgment for the AI era. She writes the Substack Tomorrow's Artifacts and is the author of the Chrono Vase Universe.
Actual Simulation essays are the theory. The Chrono Vase Universe stories are the stress tests. Lead Element ships the answers.
Before any decision gets made, there’s a moment when the picture is still forming. That moment is where I work.
It started in cavalry formations — going where things were unclear, piecing together what was actually happening, and getting it back to where it mattered in time. The terrain has changed since: FEMA disaster operations, Amazon logistics at scale, business intelligence for a national security mission, and now building with AI. The instinct hasn’t. Take something tangled and moving, give it structure, and turn it into a choice someone can make.
Grouped by what it is — live ventures first, then AI systems, published analysis, design, and concepts. Tagged live or shipped where it’s real, deployed work.
A studio I founded and built solo, running one method: LEAD — Layered Evidence, Analysis & Design. Three live products, one judgment layer. I built the whole stack — strategy, brand, content, product, and deployment — with an AI crew doing what AI does best.
Visit the studio →Its three live products — one judgment layer, across markets, learning, and structure:
A live intelligence engine across every sector, built entirely on public-domain data (SEC, USAspending, Congress, the Fed). One AI reads filings and capital flows the way an analyst does — and keeps a public, scored track record of its calls. Free cross-sector Overwatch brief; gated per-sector Scout Reports behind a real entitlement paywall.
Open Signal Watch →A learning academy built on Human-AI teaming research. Its commit-first “crossing” mechanic makes you form your own read before an AI Scout shows how a master reads the same ground — you calibrate your judgment against the machine’s. Live, with a working Scout.
Enter Atlas →Paste your work — a strategy, a pitch, a story world — and it returns an honest verdict on which structural layer is failing. The live tool built from my Coherence Engine working paper (see AI systems, below). The theory, shipped.
Open the tool →A documented agent architecture — objectives, constraints, trust tiers, and a rigor rubric — that turns open data into mission-relevant products at scale. Interactive demo plus design doc, generalized from real work.
Open the interactive demo →A custom GPT that reasons across two competing goals at once and returns a recommended next move, built on a curated knowledge base of public national security strategy documents. Defined behavior, objectives, and knowledge from the ground up.
Try the live agent →An interactive HTML paper mapping narrative coherence to predictive-processing theory — including the isomorphism between gradient descent and narrative resolution. Built with rendered equations and hand-drawn diagrams. The theory that became the live tool above.
Read the working paper →A white paper on the defense industrial base: why wartime production can’t be ordered into existence. It names the failure mode — the Output Control Fallacy — and shows that speed is a lagging indicator of upstream engineering discipline, not a lever you can push. Written months before the June 2026 GAO assessment confirmed the mechanism (100+ major programs, 12+ years to a first capability). A call made early, on the record — and it came true.
Read the white paper →An end-to-end Python pipeline against the USASpending.gov API and a novel multi-factor fragility framework across six DoD capability clusters. The finding: the defense-tech ecosystem meant to diversify the industrial base is replicating its concentration — Palantir alone holds 93% of DoD AI/data-platform obligations. Open data only; methodology fully reproducible; AI as analytical partner.
Read the paper →A mixed-methods manuscript on automation bias: why decision-makers defer to automated systems, and how that deference produces strategic blindness rather than better decisions. Quantitative sentiment analysis plus qualitative comparative case work.
Available on requestA client design engagement: turned a strategic opportunity into a working Figma prototype for intentional, low-impact travel, tested with user personas and iterated. Graduate design-leadership work, with a recorded walkthrough.
Watch the walkthrough →A single-file HTML hex-tile builder you can’t lose, traveling from Earth to Mars across four worlds. Built end-to-end for an AI-Human Fusion course — design, systems, and code generated with AI as a full creative partner.
Play it →A Figma-built capability showcase for a workforce development initiative aligned with SDG 4.9 — expanding access to the technical and vocational skills needed for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship. Concept through visual prototype.
Open the prototype →Designed and shipped a product prototype for a client in the autism & family caregiver support space (digital health). Took an ambiguous need to a tested, delivered prototype. Client and deliverable confidential under NDA — happy to discuss the approach and my role in conversation.
Details on requestA for-profit venture concept: train and deploy military-affiliated Americans as owners and operators of American manufacturing businesses — addressing both the manufacturing succession crisis and veteran underemployment. Full eight-section white paper with the economic case.
Read the white paper →Speculative fiction produced with AI as a genuine creative partner — AI-native from concept to final output.
